SDG 13 - Climate Action

Climate change has been something very close to our hearts here at YTL Group. That is why as a group, we have pledged to follow SDG 13 and reduce our greenhouse gas emissions through initiatives at our various business units. Wessex Water has been rolling out programmes under subsidiary GENeco to achieve this goal with their Bio-Bug and Bio-Bus initiatives which  operate using biogas. When Bio-Bug was launched in 2010, they used waste  from 70 homes in Bristol and that created enough fuel to power the car  for a year, based on an annual mileage of 10,000 miles. 

Subsequently in 2014, the Bio-Bus was launched, it was the first of its kind in the United Kingdom and set new standards for using biogas generated through human and food waste. The Bio-Bus seats 40 passengers and can travel up to 300km on a full tank of biogas produced from the total annual waste of approximately 5 people.


YTL PowerSeraya set themselves a target to increase the use of natural gas versus heavy fuel oil. They now have the majority of power generation from natural gas and continue to reduce the use of fuel oil thus lowering CO2 emissions. Furthermore, they have adopted the use of virtualisation technology for their in-house data system which has allowed the company to achieve energy savings upwards of 80% and reduce their CO2 emissions by 125 tonnes. Also, since 2013, PowerSeraya has helped customers achieve estimated annual energy savings of 537MWh and reduced carbon dioxide emissions of more than 230 tonnes of CO2 per year. YTL PowerSeraya started an energy makeover initiative and since 2013, the programme has helped 17 customers of YTL Power Seraya achieve estimated annual energy savings of 537MWh and reduced emissions of more than 230 tonnes CO2 per year.

YTL Cement built a Waste Heat Recovery unit at their Dama Plant in China. This RM70 million project has generated around 65,000MWh of electricity since 2015 resulting in the reduction of approximately 39,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year. YTL Cement then extended this initiative to their plant in Malaysia, Perak-Hanjoong Simen (PHS), whereby they were able to reduce approximately 45,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions per year from recovering waste heat from cement production.


YTL Jawa Timur has an Alternative Energy Development Programme rolled out in 2012 to provide sustainable energy for off-grid rural communities in Probolinggo, East Java, Indonesia . So far, it has led to the installation of 39 micro hydro units, 470 biogas units, and 78 solar panels. The installation of these alternative energy units resulted in an equivalent reduction of 8,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
